Three more HiToms were drafted on Monday during the second day of the MLB Draft. From the 2020 HiToms, Zack Gelof was drafted in the 2nd round by the Oakland Athletics and Ethan Murray was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 147th pick of the draft in the 5th round. From the 2019 roster, Logan Workman was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 7th round.
Gelof and Murray were contributors on a 2020 West Division Championship roster with pitcher Ryan Cusick, who was selected yesterday in the first round. Gelof, a Virginia Cavalier infielder, batted .364 across 15 games for HP-T in the shortened 2020 season. In a short amount of time, Gelof accumulated 19 RBIs, third on the roster.
At Virginia, Gelof was a career .316 hitter, adding power in his 2021 season, slamming a career high nine home runs and 18 doubles for the Cavaliers, who reached the College World Series.
Duke shortstop Ethan Murray was a .311 batter in 15 games with HP-T in 2020. Murray stole seven bases, leading the way for the HiToms. The on-base skills coupled with speed was a sign of things to come for the Blue Devil. In his second full season of play, Murray hit .297 with 10 steals and 4 triples. Murray was all over the Duke leaderboard, leading the team in triples, walks, and third on the roster in doubles.
Lee University’s Logan Workman was drafted after another strong season at the Division II level. With the HiToms, Workman was the pitching rotation’s ace in 2019. Workman put in exemplary work, striking out 67 batters in 43.2 innings pitched en route to a sharp 3.30 ERA. The great pitching work helped Workman to a 6-1 record, best on the team.
With Lee, Workman was one of the best pitchers in the nation, allowing just 16 earned runs across the season. The best start of the season came versus Montevallo, where Workman struck out fifteen batters in a seven-inning start. Only two batters reached base against Workman in his best start.
Tomorrow, the HiToms will look to have more players drafted in rounds ten through twenty. At least two players are mocked to For HiToms draft coverage, follow the HiToms’ twitter account, @HTHiToms, for the latest news on HiToms in the Draft and other note about your #HometownHiToms.
