The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (16-10) hung 16 runs on the Martinsville Mustangs (10-17) in a clear-cut 16-3 victory on Saturday night in Martinsville. Alex Stone hit the fourth grand slam home run of the year for HP-T in an eleven-run ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

On the eve of the Fourth of July, HP-T saved their fireworks for after the sun had set. Facing Martinsville strikeout-leader Caleb McRoy, the HiToms bats were efficient early on. After a stolen base from Ellis Stokes, fellow Greensboro native CJ Johnson hit a fly ball to score him.

Following the sacrifice fly, Thomas Caufield doubled into the right field corner, scoring Windish to give the HiToms a 2-1 third inning advantage. Caufield was not done on the night, expanding what has been a three-game stretch for the ages.

Caufield doubled to chase McRoy in the fifth, driving in another run. The Charlotte third baseman has an eight-game hitting streak and has an RBI streak of five. Over the last five, Caufield is 9-19 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Continuing the offensive production, the HiToms struck for one more in the frame on a single by catcher Alex Stone. In the sixth, the HiToms scored for the fifth time on a Matt Corder line-drive double into the left field corner.

Leading the game 5-1 after six innings, Chace Harris squashed a rally in the Martinsville seventh. The Mustangs got two runs off Tyrese Hearst, but Harris came on with the tying run at the plate and struck out Jack Elliott. Harris earned the save with 2.1 innings of hitless relief.

The seventh would be the closest the Mustangs would get to a comeback, with 11 runs scoring for the HiToms in the ninth. Alex Stone and CJ Johnson punctuated the win with home runs in the inning, Stone’s a grand slam.
