High Point/Thomasville – The High Point Thomasville HiToms finished off their weekend on the road in successful fashion with wins over the Lexington County Blowfish and the Asheboro Zookeepers,
Saturday night the HiToms made the journey down to suburban Columbia, SC where they were able to outlast the Blowfish 10-8 in a back-and-forth 10 inning affair. Bradley Wilson (P?Mississippi State) looked strong in his first start, allowing one hit in three scoreless innings. The HiToms led 4-0 going in to the bottom of the 6th, thanks to a pair of Eli Weisner (IF/Louisburg) RBI.
The Blowfish would tie it in the 6th with a four run frame, three of which were unearned.
Vito Patierno (IF-OF/Mt. Olive) would put the HiToms ahead briefly in the 8th with his clutch single. But a blown save sent the game to extra innings, where the HiToms jumped all over the Blowfish bullpen to hang 5 runs in the first extra inning, and hang on to win 10-5.
In Sunday’s game, it was pitching that carried the day for HPT. Matt Little (P/Charlotte) made the start against Asheboro and was dominant, spreading out two hits over five innings while striking out 6. Justin Johnson (SS/Lafayette) had another great game in the leadoff spot, going 2-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI, increasing his batting average to .340, and Bo Rusher (C/Gardner-Webb) also chipped in a pair of base knocks and 2 RBI.
The HiToms bullpen would take things the rest of the way, as Caleb Cozart (P/UNC-Chapel Hill), Wesley Buck (P/UNC-Greensboro), and Jacob Halford (P/NC State). allowed 1 run over the final four innings.
With the win HPT moved to within a game of .500 at 8-9 and 5.5 games back of the Savannah Banana for 1st place in the West. The HiToms have an off day Monday before a busy stretch of baseball kicks off n Tuesday in Forest City with a doubleheader against the Forest City Owls beginning at 5;15 p.m.. The twin bill marks the start of a 7 game in 5 day stretch for HPT.
