The High Point-Thomasville HiToms faced the Asheboro Copperheads at Finch Field in the latter game of a back-to-back Wednesday evening. The Copperheads struck early and often, taking control of the game with their bats en route to a mercy rule victory in seven innings.
Asheboro starting pitcher Jared Mathewson was brilliant in the shortened contest, throwing just 70 pitches, striking out eight and allowing only one hit (a leadoff single by Alex Stone in the 3rd inning) in seven shutout innings.
After some struggles from the HiTom pitching staff, Gus Hughes was solid in relief, manipulating a sharp breaking ball to strike out four Copperheads in the final two innings of game action.
HPT will now travel to Martinsville, where they will take on the Mustangs tomorrow evening in a double-header. Those games, as always, will be available to stream on flobaseball.tv. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:15.
